What and How is Narrative Text?

This article tries to answer the question "What and How is narrative text?"  This type of text is mostly presented when learning English in high school levels. Almost every semester, teachers and students devoting his attention towards the definition and example of narrative text.

Besides recount, spoof, and news item text, an understanding of the narrative text will be easily achieved if we learn it from a fundamental thing. According to www.units.miamioh.edu, narrative or story  is defined as:
A narrative is some kind of retelling, often in words (though it is possible to mime a story), of something that happened (a story)

So narrative is the portrays of events that are inter-related and are presented to the reader or the listener through writing or Word or consecutive motion picture media. A good narrative text type should be able to bring the reader or listener to the level of "experience" against the events in story. Narrative text that is rich in descriptions so that the reader is seeing, hearing, smelling, and touching. The reader should experience the story, not simply hear it.

With the delivery of the very details, readers or listeners are able to see, hear, smell, feel and touch the things that happened in that event. The reader or listener to must be capable of experiencing the the story by their selves. Learning narrative text in high school focus on three things inside of narrative story, they are:

  • The purpose of narrative text



  • The order of narrative text



  • The language features of narrative text


The thing that is inherent in the word narrative is retelling the story. So simply put the text of the narrative that function to return to the event that has occurred; factual or imaginative. Retelling this story aims to entertain readers. When readers already know the story, the author of expect the impending transfer of values, morals, or theme. This is the purpose of the teaching of a narrative text. Now let's see the answer of the question "What and How is narrative text?"

Definition of Narrative Text

Narrative is a connected account of interesting events experienced by specific participants. Its social function is to tell a story and entertain or amuse as well as well as give a certain moral lesson to the readers.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text
After the definition, another point to note is the schematic structure. A narrative text should consist of the following generic structure:

1. Orientation: Introducing the participants and informing the time and the place
2. a Complication: the rising Self-describing crises which the participants have to do with
3. Resolution: Showing the way of participant to solve the crises, better or worse

Language Features of Narrative Text
Do not forget also the traits of the language used by the narrative text, although its nature is not absolute, but most dominant, the type of text it will wear the model language feature as below:

3. Using The Simple Past Tense
4. Using relative clause
