Narrative Text Myth – The Story of Watu Ulo Beach
Once upon a time, there was a skillful magical man named Aji Saka came to Medang Kamulan, a kingdom in Java. There, he taught people many things, including magical spells. Accidentally, when he taught the spell, a hen heard it. Actually, no one allowed sneaking and hearing because Aji Saka prohibited it. Because the hen learned only halfway, she laid a very strange egg. It was bigger than before.
Just like usual, the hen brooded the egg. What happened next was shocking because the egg did not contain a chicken but a dragon baby that could talk just like human. During the time, the dragon continuously asked about his father. By people who lived in Medang Kamulan, the dragon was told that he must find and ask Aji Saka. He obeyed it and met Aji Saka who then admitted that he was the father because her mother overheard his lesson.
However, Aji Saka disallowed the dragon to go with him. He asked the dragon to meditate near the sea. Year by year, the dragon meditated until he grown up. He turned to be a giant dragon. Because he had meditated for so long, his body turned to be like wood. People who lived near the beach often cut it and used it as firewood. Finally, his body turned into stone and people believed that the pieces of the dragon body are still in the beach, which is now called as Watu Ulo. This is a beach in Jember, East Java.
